Adam Wainwright tied a career high with 12 strikeouts and allowed only four hits, but one was a decisive solo home run that led to a 1-0 defeat by the Padres in the opener of a three-game series at PETCO Park on Tuesday.

Cards tab Walters for Thursday start

Cardinals KO Wells early to top Cubs
